Welford Park

The end of a busy week for me and a Bank Holiday (public holiday) plus a week off work to look forward too - yippee! And of course the Vintage and Handmade fair on the 30th. The weekend looks to be just as busy but Mr. Bloom and I are taking off for a couple of days break next week, hopefully a chance to relax a little.

Thank you for all the lovely comments on my Pink Saturday post last week, I haven't managed any replies yet but will hopefully remedy that some time. I had some useful hints on care of the dress (which is vintage and was home-made) and also how I could to alter it to fit me, I'll have to think about that, I don't think I could bare to take scissors to it!

Last week I attended the Produce in the Park fair - in the beautiful setting of Welford House near Hungerford.

The fair itself took place on the lawns in front of the house. A great family day with local produce, crafts, dog show, fairground rides and something to do with haystacks which I didn't quite work out what it was.

Not having attended before and having read the literature I think I was expecting something a bit grander really. The craft marquee was at the far end of the lawn, if you enlarge the pic you might see the red circle which denotes where I was. There were about 10 craft stalls in the marquee plus a couple outside with their own gazebos.

My stall was at the entrance to the marquee which I was pleased about as it meant I could spread out a little.

A fair number of people came to the marquee, unfortunately they weren't buying much except home-made jams and chutneys - the stall across from me did a roaring trade all day. For the rest of us it was very slow going. I guess people hadn't come that day with the intention of buying handmade goods. I normally don't take stalls at these kind of charity events, they can be a bit hit and miss, I decided to do this one on impulse, it had sounded promising. Though I did make a profit, it wasn't enough to justify having spent a whole day on the effort. It could have been worse, my mum and dad did a table-top sale locally the same day and made £1! Ah well, c'est la vie.

Unusually for me, I didn't buy anything. I almost did but the lady whose stall it was on (selling bought-in mass-produced goods) subsequently came over to mine and made what I felt was a very rude comment about one of my items - along the lines of "do you sell a lot of those, I've seen them before but I've never really seen the point of them myself.....why would people buy them?" After that I found it very hard to see the point of her!
Anyway, hope you all have a lovely weekend, whatever you are doing.

  3. What a rude person! Some people are just not able to appreciate all the work that goes into hand-made items.

Hope other fairs are much more lucrative for you!

  4. Dearest Lucy Bloom...well at least you had a beautiful spot for the fair...and you DID make a little profit. Your things are so cute...I can't believe they just passed them by. If I were there, I would surely buy something lovely from you. I still have your tiny little flowered heart on my fridge andd use the cute little clothes pins all the time.
Won't you give your honey, Mr. Bloom, my regards and that I hope you both enjoy your break from REAL LIFE for awhile. We ALL need those kind of breaks..

  8. Oh Lucy, I know you are being very polite about it all but setting up and not selling much at all it the absolute pits and then to have a rude person ( who was probaly selling lots of her bought in ....) really makes you want to spit chips and have a good whine...I mean wine...I love your things and would have been first in line ( well I would have started the line). I do know exactly how you feel though and you are sooo much sweeter about it than I would/have been.

  15. Aren't people odd? I guess rude people, such as the woman you encountered, don't stop to consider
how they may affect the other person before they spout off what they think. They just have an urge to "share" their feelings, without a thought about yours.

I would have loved to have come across your stall Lucy. It would have been a lovely surprise and a feast for the eyes.

  16. Your stall looked brilliant.. so sorry the buyers weren't there.I rememeber doing a antiques fair at Newbury racecourse one time and only sold 1 book and that was to my mother!!....it is so disheartening....hope the 30th makes up for it..as for your rude 'person' she should remember to old adage..'if you can't say something nice say nothing!!'...

  17. Like all the previous comments I, too, think your stall looks amazing and I would be immediately drawn to it. Such a shame you didn't make enough money to justify the effort (and it is such lot of hard work). The other lady (and I use the term lightly) obviously wasn't brought up with the adage 'If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all'.

  18. Hi Lucy,
I really do feel for you - I have been to events such as this in the past and it can be soul destroying. And to have rude comments to boot is just awful. (I stopped doing the Shepton Mallet Antiques fair, would you believe, because people didn't 'get' my look...thank goodness for all the kindred spirits who shop on-line! They make everything worthwhile.)

Well, you can just prove to rude-lady that people do love your stock, when you sell loads at the V&H on Saturday!
    See you there!

  19. Sorry to hear the fair wasn't so good, you just can't tell how things will go can you? Your stand looks absolutely beautiful, I would have been a captive audience for some time just drinking in all the loveliness! Have a good time this weekend, now I've found your blog I'll be back to see how it all went!
    Take care

  20. Lucy, your space looks so attractive, and it was filled with lovely items. Too bad, it was a slow day.

Bummer about the rude person. I don't know why people have to be like that.

  24. HAHA! Good for you for not buying! I once asked the price of some scrummy 50s pyrex on a stall and the silly woman said, "well they sell for quite a lot so I want £5 but I think they're horrid. I can't think why anyone would want them". How's that for an own goal!! HAHAHA! t.x
